Institutions - Channel 4

Mission Statement
"The public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular:
demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
exhibits a distinctive character."

Funding
It’s a privately run commercial station. Through the sale of on-air advertising programme sponsorship
It can also sell shows that they have rights for, for example; Lost was sold to Sky 1.
It can also receive government funding, in 2007 the government granted them £14,000,000

public service broadcasting

Includes radio, televison and other electronic media outlets that receive some or all of their funding from the public.
Like we just said Channel 4 recently received 14,00,000 and that was from the television license, so this makes Channel 4 a Public Service Broadcaster.

Internet Presence
It has its own website; www.Channel4.com
In November 2006 they launched Channel 4 on demand (4OD). Which allowed viewers to watch any programme off the Internet.

Audiences
Because it’s a terrestrial channel it appeals to a wider audience.
Though it has specific programmes for specific audiences as such; skins aimed at 16-25 yrs, Countdown aimed at 50 yrs and above.
